Chapter 15: Too Many Coincidences

Waves crashed against the sand as Keri and I walked down the Yarburn beach. She’d insisted that she wanted to spend more time with me so I wouldn’t be alone in here, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her I was used to it by now. That would’ve been a little too depressing, even for me.

The sound of the rolling tide followed us along the shore, just like our footprints. As we walked, our trails vanished into the distance.

The beach had the orange sky of dusk. Widows’ Forest was in a nighttime setting, Galrinth was set during daylight, and Lucineer was so snowy that it barely mattered. It made me curious about how the day/night cycles might look if one could observe all of Basetier from on high.

“I think I was wrong when I said I like extroverts,” Keri said, hands held behind her. “I really like people who surprise me. It’s hard to imagine that you’re already Wanted even though you’ve only been playing for two weeks.”

Has it really been that long?

I figured this was a test to see how humble I was. “I have very little else that I can do. I still haven’t gotten what I need to truly make my strategy effective yet, though.”

I was preparing a lie to keep my plan a secret, but it turned out she was more perceptive than I had thought.

“You’re going to try to get the gravity spell, aren’t you?”

I gave her a look.

She smiled shyly and linked arms with me. “Come on, Noah, I’m a Spellcaster as well, and I’ve seen the stats of your Crystal Blades. The reason they have no durability is because they have very little weight to them. With the gravity spell your weapon’s weight only increases a little, but everyone else’s would become unmanageable. Am I right?”

Busted.

I sighed. “You just know everything, don’t you?”

“I only know magic—support magic mostly—and if you think about it, that’s exactly what gravity is.” She sighed. “There’s only one problem with your strategy.”

I grinned. She was begging to show off her own knowledge. “Oh yeah?”

“Originally the gravity spell was learned by defeating certain bosses, but now it can only be accessed through defeating a Spellcaster who possesses it. That’s why it’s unlikely for White Mages like me to be able to learn it.” She ran a finger up my arm. “You might have a chance, if you get to the Secotier dungeons, that is.”

“I assume that’s where those who want to learn the spell go to gain access to it?” I said. “Which means that to complete my strategy I’ll have to defeat a Spellcaster there?”

Keri nodded. “I can help you once we go through all the Primatier dungeons. There’s still a lot to do there.” She looked up at me as we walked, eyes sparkling.

The sky began to change again. We were walking out of the sunset-covered region of the beach into the night area of the connecting peninsula, which eventually led to the tail end of Widows’ Forest.
